Abstract

Green Human Resource Management (GHRM) integrates environmental sustainability into human resource practices. However, evidence on its relationship with organizational sustainable performance remains limited in emerging economies, particularly the Nepalese banking sector. This pilot study examines the relationship between five GHRM practices—green recruitment and selection, green training and development, green performance management, green compensation and benefits, and green employee relations—and organizational sustainable performance, drawing on the Ability–Motivation–Opportunity (AMO) framework and Institutional Theory. Data were collected from 54 banking professionals in Nepal. Organizational sustainable performance was measured through green innovation, green culture, and green employee behaviour. Multiple regression analysis was employed to examine the relationships between GHRM practices and sustainable performance. Green training and development is positively associated with all three dimensions of organizational sustainable performance. Green performance management showed a positive, although weakly significant, relationship with green culture. The findings suggest that capability-enhancing GHRM practices, particularly green training and development, may play a more prominent role in supporting organizational sustainable performance in Nepalese banks. The findings highlight the importance of strengthening employees’ green knowledge and capabilities through training and development. Future research should validate these findings using larger, more representative samples and other sampling techniques. The study extends the GHRM literature by jointly examining five GHRM practices and three dimensions of organizational sustainable performance through the AMO framework, providing preliminary evidence from the less explored Nepalese banking context.
