Abstract
This article examines the concept, practice, and significance of Vipassana meditation in relation to the Buddha's teachings on suffering and its cessation. Its two objectives are to explain the philosophical foundations of Vipassana in Buddhist thought and to analyse its practice and philosophical and practical significance. The study uses a qualitative, library-based interpretive review of selected Buddhist discourses, Nepali and English publications on Vipassana, and relevant published research. The analysis identifies mindful observation of experience, the changing character of feeling, equanimity, craving, and wisdom as interconnected themes. It distinguishes the broader framework of Buddhist mindfulness from the specific sequence of breath awareness and systematic observation of bodily sensations taught in the S. N. Goenka tradition. Potential practical implications include self-observation, emotional awareness, ethical restraint, and balanced responses to experience. However, Buddhist soteriological claims should not be treated as equivalent to empirically established clinical outcomes. The article concludes that Vipassana is significant both as an experiential approach to understanding suffering and as a practice oriented toward insight, equanimity, and ethical self-cultivation.
